We've put together some answers to questions you may have wanted to know but never got around to asking.

I got into trouble with the police recently and I’m worried about what my rights are. Who should I speak to for advice?

Speak to your local youth offending team or probation service who will be able to advise you on what your rights are. There are also some useful websites such as Direct Gov which has a good 'know your rights' section.

I want a job but I've got a criminal record. Do I stand a chance?

Employers should be more interested in what you have to offer than in your convictions. You need to be aware of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 which enables convictions to become "spent" or forgotten after a "rehabilitation period". Get advice from your Connexions worker or Job Centre Plus about how best to tell an employer that you have committed an offence in the past. NACRO, the crime reduction charity, has some useful information about disclosing convictions on its website. You could also visit the Apex Charitable Trust which helps people with criminal records to secure a job or self-employment.

Can I pick the mentor I'm matched up with?

You won’t be able to choose your mentor but we work hard to make sure you are matched up with someone that you’ll get on with. We know that sometimes it doesn’t work out but mentoring is usually a great experience for you and your mentor. If for any reason it isn't working then please speak to your resettlement worker or someone who manages the mentoring scheme - they will try to find you a more suitable mentor.

I recently left custody and I'm worried about my future. What can I do to make sure I don't get into trouble again?

Knowing you want to avoid trouble is the first step in the right direction. Speak to someone in your youth offending team or probation office if you need advice. It might not be easy but you can make changes.

I think I might qualify for the RESET programme but I haven't heard anything about it. How do I find out more?

There is certain criteria that you must meet to qualify for RESET. Have a look at the 'About RESET' section to find out more. If you do meet the criteria then speak to someone in the resettlement team where you are.
