Mentoring

If you're part of RESET you can get extra support by asking for a mentor. A ‘mentor’ is a volunteer who will spend time with you and offer support around your resettlement needs.  It’s up to you whether you want one.

How could a ‘mentor’ support me? By motivating you, encouraging you, and by boosting your confidence. Mentors come from many different backgrounds but the one thing they have in common is that they want to help you get back on your feet.

Why do I need a mentor?

  • To add to your existing support network
  • To allow you to prioritise and focus better
  • To allow you to achieve your potential
  • To get new ideas and plan for the future

To be referred to the RESET mentoring service you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be aged 15 -18 years and serving a custodial sentence
  • Be planning to live in one of the areas we cover
  • Be signed up to RESET
  •  Have resettlement needs
  •  Want a mentor

If I have a mentor what will happen?

  • You will be matched with an adult volunteer
  • If you are in custody your mentor will meet with you in the YOI
  • Meetings will be for around an hour
  • Your mentor will also meet with you regularly back in the community

Have a look at our case study section to see what one mentor said about the experience. If you are from Rochdale, Oldham, Tameside or Stockport then mentoring should be starting in your area in early 2006. Visit this section for updates. If you are not in the RESET areas then ask your Youth Offending Team, Connexions or Probation Offices about other mentoring services that may be able to support you.
